Our answers to your questions

What are agri-energies?

To meet the many challenges they face and ensure the long-term viability of their operations, farmers can become players in the energy transition through agri-energies. These represent all sources of energy production derived from agricultural activities, including agrivoltaics.

Agrivoltaics is the practice of combining solar energy production with agricultural production, in synergy. Its aim is to bring benefits to the farm while producing renewable energy.

Our teams have developed tools that enable us to determine during the development phase the technology best suited to the crop, the farmer's itinerary and the farm machinery. Panel height, spacing and sensors can be adapted to the needs of the crop in question.

Every project is designed with respect for the site, from its construction using reusable, recyclable materials and a structure that limits the artificialization of the soil, to its dismantling with a site that respects the soil, biodiversity and local culture.

With 8 years' experience in agrivoltaics, Ombrea has the expertise to develop projects with real agronomic and climatic benefits for protected crops.

Ombrea can implement a range of technologies adapted to the specific needs of each operation.

For arboriculture, the most suitable agrivoltaic technology is the pilot-operated rotating shade, whose axis of rotation can reach heights of 4 or even 5 meters. It is therefore perfectly suited to fruit trees.

The panels are controlled by algorithms that integrate real-time microclimate data from sensors in the plot. This enables us to create optimal conditions for the orchards' development.

Agri-energies can provide many services for tree farms. To name but a few:

  • Guaranteed cold accumulation during the dormant phase. Lack of winter cold can have a number of consequences: flower and vegetative bud drop, weak foliage and shoots, late flowering, and reduced yield and fruit quality.

  • Protection against summer drought, which can lead to drying out or burning of green organs, directly affecting yield.

  • Preserve soil moisture by reducing evapotranspiration and optimizing irrigation.

To launch an agrivoltaic project, in arboriculture as in any other type of crop, you need to follow 3 distinct steps.

Initially, project definition and qualification enable us to validate the solution adapted to your needs and your operation, and to verify its feasibility. This is followed by contractualization and development, with the aim of validating the project with the relevant authorities. Finally, once the project has been completed, Ombrea operates the plant, aiming for optimum synergy between crop protection and renewable energy production.
